Do Dark Wallpapers Save Battery? OLED vs LCD Explained

2026-10-26·4 min read·Hawkforge

The short answer

Yes, on OLED screens. No, on LCD screens.

On an OLED (or AMOLED) display, every pixel makes its own light. A black pixel is simply switched off and uses almost no power. The darker your wallpaper, the less power those pixels draw.

On an LCD display, a backlight shines behind all the pixels all the time. A black pixel just blocks the light; the backlight still uses the same power. A dark wallpaper looks nice on LCD but doesn't save battery.

Do I have an OLED screen?

  • ●iPhone: every iPhone from the iPhone X onwards uses OLED, except the iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and the SE models.
  • ●Android: most mid-range and flagship Samsung, Google Pixel and OnePlus phones use OLED/AMOLED. Check your phone's spec sheet for "OLED" or "AMOLED".
  • ●Laptops and monitors: most are still LCD. OLED laptops usually advertise it prominently.

A quick test: turn the brightness up in a dark room and open a fully black image. If the screen looks truly black with no glow, it's probably OLED.

How much battery does it actually save?

Less than people hope, but it isn't nothing. Your wallpaper is only visible on the home and lock screens; most of the time apps cover it. The savings are biggest when:

  • ●your screen brightness is high,
  • ●the wallpaper is mostly true black (not dark grey), and
  • ●you spend a lot of time on the home screen or use an always-on lock screen.

Combining a dark wallpaper with your phone's system-wide dark mode makes a bigger difference, because then the apps go dark too.

What makes a good dark wallpaper?

  • ●Real blacks: large areas of pure black (#000000) switch pixels off entirely. Dark grey still lights them up a little.
  • ●Small, bright accents: a thin neon line or a few stars look striking on OLED because the contrast is perfect.
  • ●Low clutter behind icons: keep the busy part of the image away from where your app icons sit.
  • ●No big white areas: bright patches cost the most power and are harsh at night.
